I don’t know what made me look for it, but I found 1985’s classic anime series on Netflix tonight. I didn’t really see much of it as a kid–my main memory being a glimpse caught of it at a neighbor’s house while visiting my cousin.
To my surprise, there was only one season listed on Netflix… of 85 episodes!
And I only got through about 1.2 of those episodes before I was tired of it. The military sci-fi aspect, I’m sure, is great. The animation is supercool. But aside from the voice over narration, the very first actual scene of the entire series is one rife with trademark, goofy “Japanimation” dialogue. It’s the one thing that keeps me from being able to get into anime. My ears just naturally reject the dialogue, and did even when I was a kid.
So I won’t likely be watching this classic show. Obviously a lot of people love it, and have for 30 years. But it’s just not in my taste, which is kind of a disappointment. About the only examples anime I’ve found that I like (and probably haven’t seen in 20 years either) are the classics Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Princess Mononoke. Those I like. 🙂
